A proper re-release, Age of Mythology: Retold, was announced in 2022, but little is known of it as of June 2023. This impressive mod adds a new complete faction to Age of Mythology, providing a unique experience with new models, animations, sounds, mechanics, and much more. The majority of the competitive community returned to the original version of the game, modified for balance. The game was stabilized in skirmish and multiplayer, but the Tale of the Dragon campaign remains in a notoriously flawed state, requiring a Steam Workshop mod to make it more enjoyable. At the same time, the game was updated to version 2.0 to include several major balance changes and new units available even to players who did not buy the expansion pack. In January 2016, this version of the game received the Tale of the Dragon expansion which included the Chinese civilization and its belonging campaign, but was received poorly by the fans for its bugs and poor production quality. It features redone effects, native high resolution and multi-monitor support, Steamworks multiplayer and enhanced observer modes.
